A New Lease of Life for Penny Farthing Jewellers
After a life-changing personal battle, a popular East Grinstead jeweller is preparing to reinvigorate their listed Tudor showroom with their first ever sale
The longest row of Tudor buildings in the UK is home to Penny Farthing Jewellers, on East Grinstead High Street. Steve Rogers, owner of the business, has been on somewhat of a personal and professional journey in the last two years. Since its opening in 2005 Penny Farthing has been a popular shop, with loyal discerning customers who appreciate high-end, exquisite jewellery and watches. Steve himself has had a long and distinguished career as a skilled craftsman, an educator running workshops and still travels around the world sourcing top quality pieces and gaining inspiration for his collections. His high standing in the jewellery world was recently recognised when he was placed in the Top 100 Inspiring Independents by The Retail Jeweller.
Things changed in November 2017 when Steve collapsed in the showroom. His heart was to blame, and months of ill health followed. Conversations were had around the business – should they sell up or move away? Was Steve’s full and busy life putting his health at risk? In February 2019 Steve underwent heart surgery, which was thankfully a huge success. Following a full recovery – Steve now feels better than ever and is healthier than before the illness – the Penny Farthing team returned to their conversations about the future of the shop.
With a new lease of life, Steve and his family decided to not only keep going at the current premises at 28 High Street, but to breathe new life into that too! Penny Farthing’s beautiful old shop will therefore be restored and revitalised in February 2020.
The shop will be closed for one week from Monday 28 October for a stock take in preparation for their first ever sale. It will re-open on Saturday 2 November at 10am, and every item of stock* will be reduced by up to 50%. Customers old and new are invited to visit and browse the collections which include diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls set in gold, platinum and sterling silver, all at incredible prices for a limited period. The sale phase will end just after Valentine’s Day in February 2020, and the exciting renovations will then commence!
